Four fields icon with finely minted and enameled silver oklad, depicting the Mother of God of Smolensk, the Mother of God as a healer, the Mother of God alleviate my sorrow and the Mother of God of the joy of all sufferers
Provenance: German private collection

The Russian four fields icon dates to around 1880. In the upper left field is the Mother of God of Smolensk with the Christ Child. The Christ Child is blessing with the right hand and holding a scroll in the left. In the upper right field appears the Mother of God as a healer herself, as a doctor healing at a sickbed. The Mother of God alleviate my sorrow can be seen to the lower left, whose festive day is celebrated on January 25. The Christ Child is sitting on her arm holding an opened scroll. Lower right is the Mother of God of the joy of all sufferers. The silver oklad is crafted of fine silver mint. Floral ornamentation adorns the frames of the figures with plastically shaped drapery. Open-work halos with enameling in different shades of blue embellish the oklad in addition.

The silver oklad is marked with the master’s mark ‘A ?‘ (Alexander Feodorowitsch Golowin, silversmith master, honorary citizen, owner of a silverware factory, Moscow) and the fineness ‘84’ with a symbol. The condition is very good with partially small losses and abbreviations of the paint. The back and the sides are covered in black velvet. The silver oklad depicts marginal cracks, which does not impact the overall very good impression of the icon. The dimensions are 22 x 18 cm. (tm)
