Description
Early Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Northeastern U.S. origin, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and flared rim, decorated with alternating slip-trailed vertical hash marks in groups of three and four. This unusual design may indicate the jar had a 3/4 gallon capacity. Made without a brown slip on the interior, a trait found on many of the earliest American stoneware pieces known, as well as some pieces produced into the early 19th century. Base and rim chips. Firing flaws to surface, typical of stoneware from this early time period. H 9 3/4".
