Description
Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher with Iron Slip Decoration, attributed to Thomas Chandler, Edgefield, SC, circa 1845, highly-ovoid pitcher with flared collar with rounded rim, the surface covered in a greenish alkaline glaze and decorated around the body and along the collar with a sweeping slip-trailed foliate design in iron slip. Excellent form with strong decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Southeastern Virginia collection amassed decades ago. An in-the-firing separation on underside, not visible on interior. A very large section of spout and right side of collar restored (approximately 35% of collar). Handle restored. Hairlines on underside, extending onto base. H 9 1/2".
