Ensemble of ornately carved pestles used as utensils for chewing betel nut
Pestles such as these were used to soften and mill betel nuts in mortars. When chewed the fruit of the areca palm acts as a natural stimulant, which is very popular in the Sepik region. The peoples from this area create numerous utensils used for the consumption of betel nut, including storing vessels, mortars and pestles. The latter are often elaborately carved and adorned with figural imagery depicting spirits, ancestors or supernatural beings.
The pestles are in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. The length ranges from 25 to 50 cm. (tfa)
