The ‘kono’ mask depicts a mythical beast, a hybrid creature with features from both elephant and crocodile. In Bamana society they belong to a specific initiation level and are used by the male members during ceremonies, reflecting abstract qualities of judgment and discernment of good and evil.
Condition:
The mask is in good condition with wear consistent with age and use. There are some abrasions and losses, e.g. to the top of the ears, as well as some cracks due to age. The dimensions are 61 x 21 cm.
