Italy, around 1600
Circle of Pasquale Ottino (1578-1630) – Italian painter
Overall dimensions: 36 x 25 x 0,8 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: Private Collection, Germany
A small cabinet piece presumably intended for private devotion
The present painting was executed on marble and is the work of an Italian artist active in the circle of the painter Pasquale Ottino around 1600. The piece depicts the Crucifixion of Christ, surrounded by three putti collecting the blood of his wounds. Paintings on slate or marble plates became extremely popular between 1590 and 1630, and were very sought-after collectible items with collectors and patrons. The smooth and shiny surface allowed the artists to play with the patterned material and to create illusionistic effects. In Italy, the main centers of productions were Florence and Verona, where Pasquale Ottino lived and worked, too.
The marble support is in very good order considering its age. The paint surface shows a number of tiny paint losses and a few areas of discolored restoration, especially affecting the angel on the right and the lower parts in the foreground. Inspection under UV Light reveals the before mentioned traces of restoration and further strengthening to the darker details of the composition. The marble plate measures 36 x 25 x 0.8 cm (height x width x depth).
Pasquale Ottino (1578-1630)
The painter Pasquale Ottino started his artistic training at the studio of the well-known artist Felice Riccio (1542-1605). The preserved sources indicate that Ottino then was continuously active in Verona, where he was also born. It is still doubted, if the artist went on a trip to Rome around 1615, accompanied by his early schoolmate Alessandro Turchi (1578-1649), who had also been trained by Riccio, and Marcantonio Bassetti (1586-1630).
