Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chimu, ca. 900 to 1470 CE. An intriguing group including two well-functioning terracotta whistles that appear to be shaped like seashells, thirteen tubular shaped terracotta beads, one pointed cap-like clay piece and a woven textile comprised of camelid fibers that is knotted at each end. These knots contain seeds intended to be planted in the afterlife. Size: longest bead measures 2-1/4" (15.7 cm); whistles each measure approximately 2-3/8" (6 cm); textile 21-1/2" (54.6 cm).
Provenance: Ex-private Crested Butte, CO collection, acquired in 1987.

Condition
Intact. Whistles function well with nice areas of burnishing and a bit of earth encrustation to one. A few nicks to about 5 of the 13 beads. Textile shows a bit of discoloration and minor fraying.
