Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Huari/Wari, ca. 500 to 800 CE. An attractive kero or cylindrical beaker with flaring sides, a vessel popular when Wari and Tiwanaku dominated the central and southern Andes and used for the consumption of chicha (corn beer) during ceremonies as well as more pedestrian gatherings. Keros played a significant role in maintaining and building social and political relations. This example is adorned with painted abstract bird heads or masks in profile with prominent beaks and feathers in hues of red, grey, black and white against an orange background. Above and below the register of birds are stylized geometric motifs in red, white and black. Size: 4-1/4"H x 5-1/8" in diameter at rim.
