Description
103. Ivory Satirical Monkey-Jockey Cane-Ca. 1880-Sizeable ivory knob carved to depict a monkey’s head with stretched, pinned ears and rosewood riding cap. The head comes on a longer and tapering bone plinth and a well-dressed, knobby blackthorn branch freed from its bark and fitted with a metal ferrule.-Probably inspired by one of Jean Ignace Isidore Grandville drawings, this cane with a socio-satirical background uses mockery and derision to demonstrate the negative aspects of the human folly. Indeed, the primate displays a whimsical genius and is something of an iconic figure.-H. 3 ¼” x 2”, O.L. 41 ¾”-$800-$1,000
