Description
This is a group of four separate panels, two pairs of matching designs. They were originally door panels that have been trimmed down, ready to be hinged together to form a four fold screen. These panels have a nice weathered texture. They were most likely exposed to the elements as doors leading to a walkway around a courtyard,The panels are made of shan mu, a type of fir that is easy to carve but sturdy. The decorative elements on these panels are a combination of figural settings, botanical motifs and mythical creatures as confronting dragons. They are well balanced in two well thought out designs. The figural compositions were taken from scenes of popular dramas, well known in popular culture of that time. Complicated joinery were used to keep the open lattice work together. These panels came from a stately home in Anhui Province, Southeast China, and they date from early 19 century if not earlier. Each panel is 15 inches wide, 2,25 inches thick and 74 inches high,
