Description
Rare Sewer Tile Frog Pitcher, Rochester Sewer Pipe Company, Rochester, NY, circa 1890, tankard-form pitcher with rustic bark surface, the spout decorated with an applied figure of a frog above a flower blossom, the sides with molded and applied figural scenes of a man smoking a pipe, seated atop a barrel. Incised detail to frog's body and face. Frog and other applied designs additionally include gouged circular embellishments. A small number of signed sewer tile pitchers with distinctive frog spouts indicate this example was made at the Rochester Sewer Pipe Company in Rochester, NY, possibly by the German-born potter, William Hirzel, or Scottish-born potter, William Lyle. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 6 1/2".
