Description
Monumental Four-Handled Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Medial Ridge, attributed to Tinsely W. Craven, Henderson County, TN, circa 1840-1860, large-sized, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and applied lug handles at the shoulder and midsection, the center of the jar with distinctive raised clay band around its circumference. Surface dipped in a whitish slip and covered in a salt glaze with appealing glaze runs to the shoulder area. A sculptural Tennessee stoneware form, distinctive to the Craven family. Provenance: Recently found in the Midwestern U.S. Cracks to bottom half of jar, one of which continues onto the underside. Minor chipping to base, some of which is glazed over. A few chips to raised band, the longest being a shallow chip measuring 1 1/4". A shallow chip to one handle. A few typical firing flaws. Some flaking to a salt glaze run, which extends from shoulder to the raised band at center. Exfoliation to interior. H 20".
