Edward Barnard & Sons

Edward Barnard & Sons is possibly one of the first silversmiths worldwide. The origin of the company dates back to Anthony Nelme, who was active around 1680. Francis Nelme inherited the business after his father's death in 1722 and managed it until 1739, when Thomas Whipham took over the company. In 1756 it was taken over by Thomas Whipham Jr., who formed a partnership with Charles Wright. Thomas Jr. retired in 1775, and the business was continued by Charles Wright. From 1796 Henry Chawner, who was the master of Edward Barnard, directed the company. In 1796 John Emes joint the company as a partner, and later Edward Barnard was hired as manager. In 1808 Edward Barnard and Rebecca Emes became the owners of the company. In 1829 the ownership was passed to Edward Barnard, his son Edward Barnard Jr., John Barnard and William Barnard, trading under the name Edward Barnard & Sons. After the retirement of Barnard Sr., the manufactory was taken over by Edward Barnard Jr. and other family members along with Robert Dubcock. From 1910 the company traded under the name Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd. In 1977 it became a subsidiary of Padgett & Braham Ltd. (cko)
