Description
A fine example of a Steam Gauge & Lantern Company in Rochester New York. This is a single piece frame so it takes a pinch pot. The brass top is fantastic condition wise. The lid has a typical. Strong NYLE&W RR stamping in the roundish Steam Gauge lettering style. The vent area has the Steam Gauge & Lantern Company Rochester logo stamped in an arc. This frame is a good example of the distinctive vent holes and bail ears. This early frame also has a skirt that the vertical wires run through and are anchored to. This feature is only found on early frames. The joint between the base collar and the bell is a little separated on the joint. It's holding fine so I wouldn't bother to scrape it out and re-solder it until it completely gives way. The pinch pot has a very nice double whale oil pick wick brass burner on a glass fount. The pinch pot collar and spring tabs were re-soldered at some point. This frame displays great!
The globe is a standard narrow barrel style used by this Erie predecessor. It has NYLE&WRR cast across the front in fancy lettering. There are some minor flakes off the top and bottom edges of the globe. These narrow barrels really look skinny the first time you see one. They always clear the frame cages.
The New York Lake Erie Railroad is a transition name for the Erie Railroad. The earlier name was Erie Railway and then New York Lake Erie & Western from 1878 – 1895 when it became the Erie Railroad.
