Pre-Columbian Costa Rican Tripod Pot, Avian Head on Front of Pot, Rattle Legs, Slight Traces of Paint Pattern Atlantic Watershed Region 1000-1500 AD, Dimensions: 4.5" X 4.5" - Pre Columbian Pottery and Pendants from Greater Nicoya which is known today as Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This region was a buffer zone from the Aztecs and the Mayans to the North and the Incans and Moche of the South. The Greater Nicoya area was occupied by Aztecs and Mayans who fled the Mexican region around 600 AD (Period V), this new civilization became known as the Chorotegas or “fleeing people”. The Chorotegas were the only indigenous peoples in Costa Rica to have a written language, comprising hieroglyphs similar to those used by the Maya. They were also skilled artisans, producing ornamental jewelry and jade, and coloring cotton fabrics with animal and vegetable dye. It was the Chorotegas who made the bulk of the distinctive ceramics and their own special purpose pottery which was traded all over Central America and Southern Mesoamerica.
