Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya, ca. 300 to 800 CE. A tall, excellently-preserved ceramic tripod bowl with tall rattling legs, sometimes called a spider pot (after the form) or a chocolate pot (after its association with the cherished cocoa beverage). The bowl deep, almost cauldron-like, with a slightly curved-inward lip. It is perched atop the legs, its lower body and legs studded with applied zoomorphic decorative motifs. Two small, spiral-shaped handles attach at the broad rim and the shoulder. This type of bowl would have been used for large social occasions or to hold offerings. Size: 8.2" W x 8" H (20.8 cm x 20.3 cm)
