Description
Germany, 16th to 18th century CE. A very rare and adorable small trinket box made of carved hardwood. A lion sits upon his haunches holding a shield in front, this decorated with image of Sol. The shield is hinged at the base allowing for small treasures to be stored. To each side is a representation of the moon , lion's tail curls up the reverse side. A wonderful and early example! Size: 2.125" W x 4.5" H (5.4 cm x 11.4 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Paul & Louise Bernheimer collection, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA., acquired before 1980
