Description: This wooden advertising chest is 19.5 " high. with a brass faceplate brass. There are three drawers, 4 x 12". On the brass plate between the drawers is "Phillipson" on top, "Clothing" between drawers one and two and "Company" between drawers two and three. There is an insignia of, "Phillipson Clothing Company" in the center of each drawer. On the bottom of the face is "Warsaw, IND".
History: In 1850, Warsaw was the largest village in the county with a total population of 304. When is was incorporated as a town in 1854 the population was up to 752. In 1864, one of the best known businesses in Warsaw was opened. This was Phillipson's clothing store for men and boys. For most of it's existence it was located at the NE corner of Buffalo and Market Streets. It was founded by Marcus Phillipson and was in business for over 90 years, closing in the late 1950's. It was known far and wide for it's clothing and also for being an important meeting place in the county.
