Description: This lot contains 17 early military documents for Colonel George W Cocheu; Orders, proficiency letters, leaves of absence, etc. He was then a 2nd Lieutenant. Documents are for 2 years prior to his duty at Fort Monroe."On graduation I was assigned to the Field Artillery but, when the separation came in 1907, I was assigned to the Coast Artillery. I was the first honor graduate of the Coast Artillery School, Fort Monroe, Virginia, in 1907 and the Advanced Course in 1910."
History: George W Cocheu graduated from the U S Military Academy at West Point, in1903. He was a roommate there with Douglas McArthur. In 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (Coast Artillery Corps) for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As a member and later as Chief of the Coordination Section, General Staff, a position of great responsibility, Colonel Cocheu devised many methods for improving and making more efficient the administrative procedure within the War Department, thereby materially facilitating the transcription of the business of the War Department and between the War Department and the Army, thus rendering service of great value to the entire military establishment. He was also awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from 1941 to 1943.
