Description
Rome, ca. 1st century BCE. This is a commercially-produced volute-style pottery oil lamp with fine details around the spout and a low-relief image of a ram. Rams were commonly sacrificed as part of Roman religious rites. The lamp may have a maker's mark but it is difficult to see. The volute style is characteristic of the early Roman Imperial style, with pronounced volutes (the things at the sides of the nozzle) extending from the nozzle; it has a large discus with no handle and elaborate decoration. Size: 3.9" L x 2.6" W x 1.6" H (9.9 cm x 6.6 cm x 4.1 cm).
