Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A mold-made pottery oil lamp with a circular base, sloping walls, slanted shoulders adorned with concentric circles, and a triangular wick spout with a pair of capital-style curves along the neck. The recessed tondo depicts a griffin in flight with a stylized head, outspread wings, a sinuous tail, and four slender legs, all above a petite fill hole. Presented in a lustrous brown color with areas of russet and beige hues, this mythological beast has certainly withstood the test of time! Size: 4" L (10.2 cm).
