Description
Roman, early Imperial period, early to mid-1st century CE. A ceramic oil lamp with the head of a gladiator in relief. The lamp has a round body, no handle, a sunken discus with relief, and a round, projecting nozzle. The base is flat, with a stamped maker's mark reading "MVNTREFI" or possibly "MVNTREPI". The head of the gladiator is shown in profile, wearing a distinctive helmet associated with his or her profession, and around the head, the discus has a pale, pinkish pigment. The rest of the lamp is a deep ochre. The gladiator was an immensely popular subject for decoration on Roman oil lamps. Size: 4.2" L x 3.05" W x 0.7" H (10.7 cm x 7.7 cm x 1.8 cm)

Intact, with remaining pigment inside the discus and very clear design and signature. Encrustation around the gladiator's helmet. Wear to edge of rim.
