Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya, ca. 1200 to 1550 CE. A large polychrome pyriform footed vessel created in the Greater Nicoya region of Pre-Columbian Costa Rica, a monumental example from the late period Pataky polychrome ceramic tradition (CE 1200-1550). The vessel was hand-built from a reddish clay with a heavy temper, possesses a beautifully contoured silhouette with a sizeable hollow pedestal foot, and an extensive iconographic program comprised of painted bands of glyph-like elements represent jaguars and other tropical flora and fauna in an abstract and inventive manner. Size: 7.5" W x 11.75" H (19 cm x 29.8 cm)
