Description
Built circa 1870 of dark Calcutta cane in 8 strip construction. Full metal sliding band reel seat, which is die stamped on barrel "H.P. Buckingham / Maker / Utica, N.Y." in 3 lines. The tip is short 2 inches, the butt and mid full length. Ferrules are seamed nickel silver, non-welted, with the female ferrule showing two rings of hash knurling. Guides are hanging rings. The grip is rattan wrapped and appears replaced for the lower 2/3 of its length. This portion is unvarnished, and a visible mating with the original varnished section is visible. There is no grip check, as the rattan tapers to the bamboo shaft. From this juncture of grip and can, for 1 inch to the first intermediate wrap, the varnish has flaked completely, leaving bare cane. Beyond, the varnish is badly alligatored. Wraps appear a brown beneath the old varnish, with tan intermediates and a possible replacement wrap at the stripping guide of variegated jasper. Pictured by Hatton on page 286. Non-original bag and brass capped aluminum tube. From the Thomas C. Kerr collection of Historic 19th century fishing rods.
