Joseph Addison Poem Verse: “O Liberty, thou Goddess!” Patriotic Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher
c. 1796-1803, Patriotic Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher, with Joseph Addison “Immortality” Poem Transfer, English Manufacture, Extremely Fine.
This rare design Liverpool Creamware Pitcher measures about 6.625” tall and 4” diameter at its base. There are two black transfers displayed. One side has a transfer showing an American Heraldic Eagle in the center of a Chain of 16 rings, representing the 16 States at that time in 1796 with Tennessee being admitted as a State. Of interest, both Tennessee and Massachusetts are spelled incorrectly on their respective rings. This transfer design is very similar to the S.13 design as noted on page 162 of the major reference book, “Anglo-American Ceramics - Part I” by David and Linda Arman. On the opposite side is a “Liberty” motto, being a verse from the poem “Immortality” by Joseph Addison (1672–1719), which itself is encircled by decorative rings displaying 15 States only through Kentucky becoming a Sate in 1792. Being of an earlier design, Tennessee is not among the listed states on this side of the Jug. Verse reads: "Oh Liberty thou Goddess Heavenly bright. Profuse of Bliss and pregnant with delight Eternal pleasures in thy presence reign and smiling plenty leads thy wanton train." This design is similar to O.1 on page 142 in the Arman book. A wonderful and interesting historic example having two transfers representing 1792 and 1796 vintage. The 1796 pattern is very clean and the 1792 black transfer is very dark and vibrant. There are no chips, flakes or other damage making this example very desirable for display.
