Description

POLYCHROME-DECORATED EARTHENWARE / REDWARE FIGURAL DOOR STOP, lead- and copper-glazed over a white slip wash, molded in the solid from the cover of a hen-on-nest glass dish, sgraffito feathers, mostly unglazed base. Possibly Strasburg, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Fourth quarter 19th century. 2 1/4" H, 4 1/2" x 5 3/4".
Poor condition, loss of head and end of tail, chipping to base edge, glaze exfoliation.

Catalogue Note: While this form has not previously been recorded, it is not uncommon for earthenware forms to be molded from a glass prototype. The glazing and clay color is consistent with those used in Strasburg, VA.
