Pre-Columbian, Southwestern USA, probably New Mexico, ca. 1000 to 1130 CE. This is a nicely intact example of southwestern pottery from the Anasazi and pre-Anasazi (Pueblo peoples) era of southwestern history. It is a small jug with a flattened-apple shape on the bottom and a widening conical spout with a small handle on its side. The decoration is black-on-white or maybe black-on-grey, with narrow black lines on the lower body and handle and chunky diamond shapes on the spout. This style appears to be Escavada black-on-white, although sometimes the boundaries between styles is not always clear. It is part of the Cibola white wares group, from the northwestern and west central parts of New Mexico - so in the Chaco Canyon area, but made before the rise of Chaco as an Anasazi center of power in the landscape.
