East Asia, Japan, ca. 1920 CE. A rectangular wooden tray painted with a dynamic rendition of an elite samurai warrior figure in the Japanese Ukiiyo-e graphic style with rich, jewel tone colors and textile patterns featuring a butterfly motif. The butterfly has been a very popular subject for Japanese artists throughout history. Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795), the founder of the Maruyama school, embraced the butterfly in his art. The butterfly later became a favored subject during the Edo period with the rise of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Most notably, Katshshika Hokusai became well known for his depictions of butterflies. By the early 20th century, Showa period artists such as Saburo Hasegawa and Ikegami Shuho also painted beautiful compositions featuring the butterfly.
