Dickens, Charles; “David Copperfield”, Bradbury & Evans, London, 1850; "Phiz" [H.K. Browne], (illustrator). First Edition, First issue. 8vo. 624 pages;
Newly bound by Bayntun-Riviere (stamp-signed inside cover in leather)in full deep navy morocco leather with elaborate gold tooling on all surfaces including inside both covers; raised bands on spines; front cover with author's oval miniature portrait painted by C.B. Barrie on ivory (or porcelain) under glass; spine lettered and dated in gilt; all paper edges gilt; two silk book marks; endpapers are heavy blue silk;
The following issue points are present to suggest this is a true first edition:
First Title Page: first state of the engraved vignette with date is present.
p.16, line 1: “recall” is misspelled “recal”
p.19, line 39: reads “cha pter ; ut”
p.132, line 20: “screwed” is used instead of “screamed”
p.225, line 22: [again] “recall” is misspelled “recal”
p.282: “Chapter XXVII” is actually on this page rather than p.283 as listed in the table of contents
p.387, line 45: “corroboration” is misspelled “Coroboration”
p.472, line 37: there are no closing quotation marks
Condition: overall remarkable condition; binding tight and square; covers extremely fine with no corner or edge wear or shelfwear; (from the rigidity of the binding it may never have been read or fully opened); no dirt or soiling; no thumbing; nearly any and only extremely sporadic and light foxing or age-toning to text paper; tiny worm hole in leather spine just below second rib (see below); both silk book marks are present, but one is broken in the middle and both have left a light blue stain on the pages to which they were contiguous to (both in the margins and outside of text); most of the paper of the illustrations has lightly age-toned or has some light to moderate dampstaining; on occasion this stain has bled lightly to contiguous page; the worm that got in from the spine created the following damage: on p.55 there is a ” hole that appears in the spine margin; it grows slowly and by p.239 it reaches the margin of the text and it is ” long by page 293; from there it diminishes quickly back to a tiny hole at page 487; a second worm hole begins at p.411 as a 1/64” hole and elongates to 2” elongated hole at p.545; at this point it meets the first hole and both decline into a tiny hole that extends to the inside of the back cover; still, exceptional first edition; from pet-free and smoke-free home;
