Newly bound by Bayntun-Riviere (stamp-signed inside cover in leather) in full deep crimson morocco leather with elaborate gold tooling on all surfaces including inside both covers; raised bands on spines; front cover with author's oval miniature portrait painted on ivory (or porcelain) under glass by C.B. Barrie; spine lettered and dated in gilt; all paper edges gilt; two red silk book marks, in tact; endpapers are heavy beige silk;
The following issue points are present to support that this is a true first edition:
p.1: heading in rustic type
p.336: woodcut of the “Marquis of Steyne”
p.453, line 31: “Mr. Pitt” for “Sir Pitt”.
Bound without advertisements.
Condition: overall amazing condition; binding tight and square; covers extremely fine with exception on one tiny ding at top of spine there is no other corner or edge wear or shelfwear; (from the rigidity of the binding it may never have been read or fully opened); no dirt or soiling; no thumbing; nearly any and only extremely sporadic and light foxing or age-toning to text paper; most of the paper of the illustrations has lightly age-toned or has some light to moderate dampstaining; on occasion this stain has bled lightly to contiguous page; dampstain to bottom of back endpaper; frontispiece and first title page uniformly age-toned; from pet-free and smoke-free home;
