Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari/Wari, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A large round wooden ear spool inlaid with an intricate shell mosaic depicting a warrior figure in motion. The shell boasts hues of shimmery cream and pink. One eye is inlaid wit a blue-green shell or stone, perhaps turquoise. Overall, a very impressive and remarkably preserved piece of wearable art! Size: 1" x 1.875" in diameter (2.5 cm x 4.8 cm)
Provenance: Ex Boston, MA collection acquired before 1975
