Description
North Africa, Morocco, Berber, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. An antique, polychrome pottery vessel created by the Berber peoples, with a globular body and twin, strap handles applied to the shoulders, handbuilt without a potter's wheel, the walls of a thickness that is determined by the wooden spatula tool and piece of leather employed to burnish the outer walls, then low fired in a pit, and decorated with geometric patterns upon both the body and the handles in red and black over tan base. Scholars believe that these geometric designs originated in prehistoric cultures of the Mediterranean. An attractive example made by the Berbers (also known as the Imazighen). Size: 9.25" W x 7.25" H (23.5 cm x 18.4 cm)

Condition
Stabilized cracks and surface losses as shown. Nevertheless a surprising amount of geometric design remains given that the low firing process is prone to relatively delicate results.
