Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Huari (Wari), coastal Peru, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. This is an anthropomorphic polychrome beaker depicting a jaguar's head with open mouth and exposed fangs; the jaguar has painted markings and wide, angry eyes. The jaguar had great symbolic power in Peruvian culture from the Chavin period (ca. 900 BCE) onward through the Wari and Moche (ca. 1000 to 1500 CE). They were associated with strength, whether or leadership, religiousness, or martial skill. This piece looks similar to one held by the Art Institute of Chicago. Size: 5" W x 5.5" H (12.7 cm x 14 cm).

Provenance: Ex Kalman Coll., CA
