Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, San-Luis-Potosi, ca. 600 to 1100 CE. A fantastic round vessel with a studded pottery body and twin handles in the form of cheerful caimans who face in opposite directions. The body of the vessel, with its bumpy texture, echoes the body of the caiman handles - and the physiology of real caimans, who have a similar pattern on their skin. Drilled holes around the lower bodies of the caimans may indicate that this vessel was sometimes hung up, or may have been put there to relieve stress during the kilning process. Size: 8.9" W x 5" H (22.6 cm x 12.7 cm)
