Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Inca, ca. 1470 CE. A figural effigy jar with a quintessentially aryballoid body, a strap handle that joins rim to shoulder, and a polychrome finish of red, yellow, chocolate brown, and white hues. On the neck, the artist depicted an abstract human visage, comprised of almond-shaped eyes with concave depressions, a protruding, pointy nose, and an open mouth of an ovoid shape similar to the eyes. The nose is delicately painted with a stitched textile pattern, and five triangular motifs accent the facial features. A wide, colorful band adorning the upper body boasts numerous narrow registers, including one that features sinuous wave motifs, another with repeated step patterns, and several continuous striations. Of note: this example is very similar to an Inca effigy jar from Machu Picchu in the Yale Peabody Museum collection. Size: 5.5" in diameter x 8.375" H (14 cm x 21.3 cm)
