Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 5th century CE. A complex and pretty blown glass vessel with slight iridescent patina but generally very translucent for archaeological glass. The main bowl has a pinched design whose shape could be compared to a squash or gourd; complex handles rise from the shoulder to the top of the rim, which is a flared bowl of its own atop a wide neck. The slight wave pattern in the bowl contrasts nicely with the smoothed neck and rim. After the invention of glass blowing in Roman Syria in the 1st century, the industry exploded and expanded throughout the Roman Empire. During the centuries of the height of the Empire, glass was used everywhere - keeping cosmetics and perfumes, serving meals, and used as storage vessels for food and other products to be shipped across the Mediterranean. Size: 3.5" W x 4.75" H (8.9 cm x 12.1 cm)
