Robert Morris, 1734-1806, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the "Financier of the Revolution," was in the final year of his term as U.S. senator from Pennsylvania when he signed this certificate selling shares in one of his land speculation schemes. The financial sleight-of-hand which served him so well managing the slender assets of the Revolutionary government eventually led to his downfall, as such enterprises as the North American Land Company proved disastrous, and he was imprisoned for indebtedness from 1798-1801.
