Description
Manner of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (French, 1796-1875), "Landscape Beside a River and Bridge, Near Mantes", oil on canvas, bears signature "Corot" lower left, "D. J. Healy Shops (Detroit, Michigan)" label en verso, 12-1/4" x 13-7/8". Framed. D. J. Healy Shops was a high-end department store, headquartered in Detroit, Michigan from 1882-1962. Though no identifiable art department was known to exist in it, D. J. Healy Shops did sell and frame original artwork, such as Eastman Johnson. D. J. Healy, himself, had an impressive art collection, and was known to gift paintings to museums, like the John Singleton Copley portrait of Mrs. Clark Gayton he gave to the Detroit Institute of Art in 1927.
Condition
There is a small 1/8" hole to the upper right quadrant of the sky, and abrading and small scattered losses along canvas edge where it presses against the frame. Painting exhibits signs of past professional restoration, including a light inpainting wash to the canopies of the left cluster of trees, two small patches en verso with corresponding inpainting to the left center cluster of trees and to the base of the long, thin center tree. Surface soling, accretions (spot of burnt sienna) to the trees on the left, and (white residue) to the upper left corner, and light yellowing of the varnish are also present. The painting has not been relined. Condition is as to be expected with age and medium.
