Description
Pre-Columbian, Puruha in Ecuador/Colombia, Carchi-Narino, Capuli Complex, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A bichrome pottery vessel, beautifully decorated with red-on-black negative resist geometric patterns, depicting a transforming bird/shaman figure, the form comprised of a bulbous body with a bird head, applied coffee-bean shaped eyes, double loops adorned with rings on each side, an upturned beak/nose and protruding mouth. Pieces so highly ornamented such as this were likely uses as offering vessels in ceremonial rituals. Size: 8" W x 9.5" H (20.3 cm x 24.1 cm)

One section of "head" repaired from rim to neck. Possible repairs/reattachments of applied loops. Expected surface wear with minor pigment losses and abrasions as shown. Base slightly rounded. Nice manganese deposits.
