Description
PAIR OF MARIE DE GARAY (FRENCH, 1861-1953) GENRE PAINTINGS, oil on mahogany panel (each), each an elaborately appointed Louis XV style interior scene (one decorative scheme differing slightly from the other), taken together to form a single humorous narrative; the first, a depiction of two daughters playing mischief with their artist-father's latest masterpiece; the second, a depiction of the father's angry discovery and his somewhat misguided reprisal; signed lower left, "VIELLE" Paris merchant's stenciled mark on panel verso, as well as several old labels, inscribed with titles "Lady Artist" and "The Artists Getting a Call Down". Each housed in likely original gilt frame. Late 19th century. 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" panel, 20" x 18" OA (each).
Paintings in excellent condition with minor abrasions at edges (obscured by frame). Some old repairs or restoration to frames (UPDATED 4/21/17).
