Description
ENGLISH PARIAN SMEAR-GLAZED BROWN CERAMIC PITCHERS, LOT OF TWO, both having heavily molded bodies and handles, undulating rims, in a deep brown clay body with white foliate sprig designs. Both marked with white floral-molded sprigs, impressed with "71". Staffordshire and other areas. First half 19th century. 6 1/4" and 9 1/8" H.
Two minute flakes on interior rim of smaller pitcher and repairs and restoration on larger pitcher, primarily on handle and rim.
Literature: "Chrysanthemum pad" described in Edwards and Hampson - English Dry-Bodied Stoneware, p. 125.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Paul Fox, Washington, DC.
Catalogue Note: Edwards and Hampson note the floral-shaped sprig on bases likely what is referred to as a "chrysanthemum pad".
