Item Details
Description
Original oil on illustration board painting of a Hawaiian bungalow by the sea- intricately painted- nice realism. No damage- nicely framed.Curtis Wilson Cost is Maui's best known and most accomplished traditionalist painter. His crisp landscapes, alive with color and scrupulous detail, are examples of heightened realism at its finest. He was born on March 9, 1953 in Palos Verdes, California. His parents Harriet and James Peter Cost went separate ways when he was a year old and he and his sister were raised primarily by his mother. The children spent summers immersed in the world of art with James, who was a successful artist with his own gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Harriet was a teacher who noticed Curtis' innate artistic ability at a tender age and encouraged him by making sure he always had an abundance of art supplies. Harriet's gentle nurturing and the many hours spent along side his father in his studio, spawned what would become a life-long love affair with art.Haleakala Locals Harriet and the children moved to Oahu, Hawaii in 1968 where Curtis graduated from Kalani High School in 1971. The following year he met Jill Radner and they married and traveled to Carmel where their visit began a career long artistic relationship with Curtis' father. It was a defining time during which Cost clarified a long held artistic aspiration. When the couple returned to Hawaii, they were encouraged by a friend to visit Maui. Once Upcountry, they knew that they had found the perfect place to live. After 12 successful years at the Village Galleries in Kaanapali and Lahaina, he opened his first one-man gallery in 1984 in the center of his subject matter in the Upcountry area of Kula. The gallery could not have been situated better, located at the Kula Lodge under the spreading boughs of a Jacaranda tree, one of the signature elements of Cost's work. He opened a second one-man gallery on Front Street, Lahaina in the year 2000. The two galleries complement one another in the repertoire of Cost's portfolio of coastal and landscape paintings. Producing hundreds of paintings, his career now spans 30 years and shows no signs of slowing.Today, Curtis and his wife Jill enjoy the quiet, ever-peaceful life in Upcountry Maui, with their two children, Julia and Elliott, three golden retrievers, and one fish. The pastoral setting, tremendous views and peaceful environment lend themselves to this master realists' perspective -- one of quiet reflection on his surroundings of exquisite beauty.Curtis Wilson Cost's original paintings and reproductions of Hawaii's land and seascapes are some of the most sought-after in the world.
