English, early 19th century. A very fine Regency period highly figured mahogany breakfront bookcase, having a pitched pediment top, the upper section with three cabinets, the center double and the sides single, each with glazed fretwork doors opening to reveal adjustable interior shelves, over lower conforming cabinets, each with paneled matched veneer cabinets doors, on a plinth base. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 84", width 86", depth 16.75". Provenance: This bookcase was located for approximately 40 years in the library at Thwaite Hall, located in Norfolk, England. Thwaite Hall was formerly a part of the larger estate of Lord Walpole, the first Prime Minister of England. A handwritten note stating this information on Thwaite Hall letterhead, a booklet on the estate, and two color photographs accompany this lot. Sold Brunk Auctions, January 5-6, 2008, as lot 903.
