Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Toltec, ca. 1000 CE. Wonderful carved volcanic stone pounder or pestle. Grey dense volcanic stone with rounded working end, tapering handle and small creature at top that looks to be a transformational being of part human, part animal or bird. Nice and rare example! Size: 6.75" H (17.1 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Paul Simon collection, Taos, NM acquired between 1960 and 1975.
