Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche III to IV, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A lovely terracotta stirrup vessel adorned with four low-relief lizards crawling diagonally down the upper walls, positioned with their tails at the base of the tubular neck and their heads and front legs touching the edge of the corseted shoulder. The Moche were very skilled ceramicists who, though probably illiterate, created visual culture that interpreted their world for us to "read" as is evident by this example. A wonderful example. Size: 4.625" W x 5.625" H (11.7 cm x 14.3 cm)
