Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A sweet glimpse at maternal love, a hand-built redware terracotta figural ensemble depicting a seated mother tenderly holding her child to her chest. Both figures present characteristic Jalisco features including an elongated head and prominent nose, the mom's frontal visage elaborately delineated with coffee bean shaped eyes and an open mouth revealing incised teeth - and tastefully decorated with a cap-like headdress or coiffure, ear ornaments (one missing), and a rounded nose ring. Otherwise she is nude with perky breasts characteristically positioned near her armpits, slender attenuated arms, and incised toes. A touching rendition of motherhood in the ancient Americas. Size: 6.75" W x 9.5" H (17.1 cm x 24.1 cm)
