Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Rare glazed pottery canteen of light clay, once glazed with nearly white lead glaze surface. One side shows a standing warrior figure, probably Herakles holding sword in his right hand another unknown object in his left. Surrounding this figure is a band of grape leaves. On the opposite side is a single lion standing on a rock outcropping, laurel leaves surrounding. An alternate possibility of the scene would be of gladiator (or sacrificial victim) and lion, a scene often played out in the colosseum of Rome, and other colosseums throughout the Roman empire. Size: 6.875" W x 9" H (17.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
