Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A lovely pottery canteen of discoid form adorned with a pair of relief monkeys on each side. Enveloped in beige slip, the vessel sits upon a rounded base with a tubular spout flanked by twin ribbon-form handles. Black slip additionally embellishes vessel, highlighting the monkeys, forming a circular border around them, and creating a lattice motif along the neck of the spout. Monkeys were highly symbolic to the ancients of the Americas. Scholars believe that the indigenous were fascinated by the physical antics of these simian creatures, viewing them as parodies of human behavior.
