Description
STRASBURG, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE CAKE MOLD, lead- and manganese-glazed, swirled eight-lobe form with eight-rib center. Attributed to the shop of Solomon Bell (1817-1882), Strasburg, VA. 1870-1880. 3 3/4" H, 10 1/2" D.
Undamaged except for three shallow chips and several glaze flakes to top of rim.
Literature: See Comstock - Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, p. 235, fig. 5.97 for an example stamped for Solomon Bell and p. 237, figs. 5.108, 5.109 for corresponding plaster models.
