15th C Chinese Sino-Tibetan Ming Dynasty YongLe Reign Period gilt bronze Buddha figure of Vajrapani Chitta Mandala (Tibetan: chag na dor je tug kyi kyil khor, English: the Mandala of the Mind, Vajra-sceptre Holder) from the Sarvadurgati Parishodhana Tantra.
In vajra posture with the . the right hand holds a vajra to the heart and the left hand with a bell supported at the hip, seated in sattva posture. As described in an important Kriya classification Tantric mandala Vajrapani is placed with Manjushri and Lokeshvara as the triad of the Lords of the Three Families. Adorned with a crown, earrings, necklaces, bracelets. With the legs in vajra posture, two legs folded together, he sits atop a double lotus throne. Extensive trace of gilt and grayish-blue pigment on the hair. The underside with incised quatrefoil flori-form petal visvavajra mark surrounding the centralized DaiJi.

Mark on upper pedestal, six incised script -KaiShu- characters, YongLe Reign Period of Great Ming (1402-1424)

PROVENANCE:
The private collections of Earl Sorensen, based out of Atlanta, is known as a prominent Buddha collector. A International businessman whom trades with various Asian countries during the 1960s. On a business trip in Western China, he received a Buddha statue as gift from a monk. Since then, he has became fascinated with Buddhist artifacts and Eastern cultures. After many decades, Earl Sorensen has planned his retirement, and decided to pass his beloved collections to appreciate collectors. Earl Sorensen's collections can be found from Lot-55 through Lot-65, and from Lot-93 through Lot-110.

LOT NOTES:

Vajrapani is one of the earliest and most recognizable characters of Buddhist art. He is known for carrying a vajra scepter and being a close attendant to the historical Buddha according to the Mahayana Sutras. In Vajrayana Buddhism Vajrapani is entrusted to safeguard all of the Tantra literature and in this regard he is known as Guhyapati - the Lord of Secrets.

Over all in EXCELLENT condition. With normal anomalies in nature, sign of stressed surface, minor scratch & dents. Surface traced wear and or declined to gilding.
